NICHOLAS HYTNER has been appointed to the board of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), taking up the position later today (28 September). He joins the Stratford-upon-Avon theatre three months after DANIEL EVANS and TAMARA HARVEY assumed leadership as co-Artistic Directors.

Hytner is Artistic Director of London Theatre Company, which he founded with NICK STARR in 2017 at its bankside venue, the Bridge Theatre. The company opened a second space, The Lightroom, earlier this year.

Formerly Artistic Director of the National Theatre from 2003-2015, Hytner's tenure there was notable for overseeing the introduction of NT Live cinema broadcasts, Sunday openings and several highly successful reduced ticket seasons.

Hytner made his RSC directorial debut in 1987 with a production of Measure for Measure, returning the following year with The Tempest and in 1990 for King Lear. He has directed several of the Bard's most famous works throughout his career.

On the appointment of Evans and Harvey this year, Hytner commented that he was "privileged to be part of the process" of their hiring.

Hytner said about his new role, “I am honoured and delighted to be joining the board of the RSC as its new co-Artistic Directors take the helm, and I am looking forward to what I am sure will be an exciting future”.

Chair of the Board SHRITI VADERA added, “I am excited to welcome Nick to the board. His exceptional experience will add huge value to the board and to the next phase of the company’s future under new artistic leadership”.
