Culture debate to inform education campaign in London
In the wake of the EBacc controversy and the recent publication of the Mayor’s Education Inquiry, 200 leaders from London's arts and cultural sector will be meeting to discuss innovative models for working in a changing education landscape. The meeting, hosted by London’s ‘bridge’ organisation, A New Direction, will consider the response needed by the sector to keep up with issues including changes to the curriculum, new school structures, school place shortages, overcrowding, high youth unemployment and uncertainty about future prospects. Delegates will be considering what can be done to ensure that culture and the arts are integral to London’s educational success and progression, and debate will contribute to the development of ‘Future Agenda’, a campaign for change that A New Direction will be building over the coming months. Speakers will include Munira Mirza, Deputy Mayor for Education and Culture at the Greater London Authority, and a panel discussion will be chaired by Tony Sewell, Chair of the Mayor's education inquiry. The event will take place on 28 March, and the speeches and panel discussion will be live streamed at http://www.anewdirection.org.uk/the-london-picture.
