Campaign for local theatres

A new campaign is hoping to inspire audiences to speak up about how much they value their local theatres. Featuring a website that explains how to lobby local politicians to support arts funding, the ‘My Theatre Matters!’ campaign will also encourage theatre audiences to get involved via curtain call speeches by actors and information in theatre programmes. It has been set up by actors’ union Equity, The Stage and the Theatrical Management Association (TMA) following a recent spate of local government arts cuts, and is supported by organisations across the sector including the Independent Theatre Council, Creu Cymru, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, The Theatres Trust and Dance UK. TMA president Rachel Tackley said that councillors tended to see theatre as a luxury: “They need to know how much their communities value the economic, social and educational impact of their investment in local theatres.”
