NICHOLAS SEROTA‘s tenure as chair of Arts Council England has been extended by a further 18 months.

A statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said this was to ” maintain stability” during the newly announced independent review of ACE, which will launch in the new year.

Serota became ACE chair in February 2017 and was reappointed for another four years from February 2021, which had been due to come to an end on 31 January 2025.

He was previously director of Tate, a role he held between 1988 and 2017.

During his directorship, he oversaw the opening of Tate St Ives in 1993 and Tate Modern in 2000.

The same year, the original Tate Millbank building was rebranded as Tate Britain.

Serota has served on the British Council’s Visual Arts Advisory Committee, as a trustee of the Architecture Foundation, and as a commissioner on the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

He was a member of the Olympic Delivery Authority, responsible for building the Olympic Park in East London for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

Serota was also director of the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford (appointed in 1973) and the Whitechapel Gallery in London (appointed in 1976).

He was knighted in 1999 and appointed a Companion of Honour in 2013.
