ZOÉ WHITLEY is stepping down as director of London’s Chisenhale Gallery.

Whitley will depart the east London gallery in March next year, citing plans to return to her career curating and writing independently. Her five-year tenure has resulted in 15 exhibitions and an expansion of the gallery’s publishing arm.

“I’m proud to have played a part in the consistently era-defining programming of one of London’s leading contemporary art incubators and, most importantly, in its truly inspiring social practice approach,” Whitley said.

“Arts leadership today may be difficult, but my worldview is perpetually expanded by what artists propose and bring to life.”

The gallery says it will begin searching for Whitley’s replacement early next year.
