Artistic Director

Wimbledon International Music Festival was founded in 2009 by Anthony Wilkinson and brings world-class musicians to venues in Wimbledon for two weeks every November. It now seeks to appoint a new Artistic Director, from February 2025, to build on its high quality programming and to grow its educational and community engagement.

Job description

  • Artistic programming / curating world-class programmes of classical and other genres of music
  • Identifying and negotiating with internationally established artists
  • Discovering and developing home-grown talent
  • Overseeing and integrating creative learning and community engagement projects
  • Balancing priorities and budgets
  • Building artistic, promotional and financial partnerships locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Being effective advocate and spokesperson for the Festival in PR and communications
  • Networking with industry leaders and opinion-formers
  • Fronting fundraising efforts
  • Nurturing relationships with funders and other stakeholders
  • Leading and managing a small and committed team of freelance specialists and local volunteers

Person specification

You will have the following:

  • International contacts and networks in the music industry
  • Good track-record and reputation in the cultural sector
  • Curatorial instincts and programming skills, recognising the interdependent relationships between composers, performers and audiences
  • Commitment to empowering music-making from across the whole community
  • Commitment to developing new audiences
  • Ability to motivate colleagues and inspire loyalty
  • Energy, drive and passion for music
  • Experience of balancing aspiration and ambition with pragmatism and financial realism – creating and managing budgets, in other words
  • Knowledge or willingness to gain an understanding of the cultural landscape, history, amenities, demographics and resources of Wimbledon, the Borough of Merton and neighbouring communities
