Job Description: General Manager, Stamford Shakespeare Company, Tolethorpe Open Air Theatre in Rutland.

Position Title: General Manager

Location: Rutland Open Air Theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, Little Casterton, Stamford, Lincolnshire. PE9 4BH

Reports To: Board of Directors

Overall Purpose of the Role: The General Manager at Tolethorpe Outdoor Theatre is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of Stamford Shakespeare Company, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the theatre, the youth drama group, volunteers and all other activities which take place at Tolethorpe Hall. This role involves strategic planning, financial management, staff management, and fostering community relationships to enhance the Company’s reputation and success.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operational Management:
    • Oversee day-to-day operations of the theatre, youth drama group and all activities in Tolethorpe Hall ensuring all activities run smoothly and efficiently.
    • Coordinate with various departments including production, marketing, and front-of-house to ensure seamless operations.
    • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and other legal requirements.
  2. Financial Management:
    • Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability.
    • Monitor financial performance, prepare financial reports, and implement cost-control measures.
    • Oversee fundraising efforts, including grant applications and sponsorships.
  3. Staff Supervision:
    • Recruit, train, and manage staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing support and development opportunities for staff.
    • Ensure effective communication and collaboration among team members.
  4. Strategic Planning:
    • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve the Company’s long-term goals.
    • Identify opportunities for growth and improvement, and implement initiatives to enhance the Company’s offerings.
    • Work closely with the Board of Directors to align operational activities with strategic objectives.
    • Coordinating marketing and publicity including organising photography.
  5. Board Liaison:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact between the theatre and the Board of Directors.
    • Prepare and present regular reports on operational and financial performance to the Board.
    • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the Board and theatre staff.
    • Assist the Board in strategic decision-making and policy development.
  6. Community Engagement:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with local community groups, schools, and other stakeholders.
    • Promote the theatre’s programmes and events to increase community involvement and attendance.
    • Represent the theatre at public events and in the media to enhance its profile and reputation.
  7. Programme Development:
    • Collaborate with play directors and production teams to develop a diverse and engaging programme of performances.
    • Ensure high standards of artistic quality and audience satisfaction.
    • Oversee the scheduling and logistics of performances and events.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in theatre management or a similar role.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Passion for the arts and commitment to community engagement.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work required.
  • During the season hours will need to adjust so that the General Manager passes over directly to the Front of House Manager for the performances.
  • Based at Tolethorpe Open Air Theatre with some travel for meetings and events.
